Private tour or group tour of Oman: which suits you?

Anyone looking for a tour of Oman soon comes across two flavours: the group tour with fixed departure dates and the tailor-made private tour. Both take you to the Wahiba Sands, Nizwa and Jebel Shams. Yet you experience the country very differently. In this article we set out the differences honestly, so you can choose what truly suits you. We only organise private tours ourselves, and we explain why.
What is the difference?
On a group tour you travel with a party of usually twelve to twenty people, by coach or in a convoy of 4x4s, with a tour leader and a fixed programme. Departure dates are fixed, and so are the hotels.
On a private tour you travel with your own party only: as a couple, a family or with friends. You leave when you want, the itinerary is built around your wishes and you drive yourself in a rental car or with your own driver-guide. There is no tour leader in the group, but there is a tour operator and a local partner who prepare everything and stay reachable on the road.

When a group tour is a good fit
A group tour has real advantages, and it would be unfair to leave them out.
- You prefer not to travel alone. For solo travellers a group is sociable and safe, although Oman is perfectly easy to travel alone as well.
- You do not want to arrange anything. A tour leader solves everything on the road, you just get on and off.
- You want the lowest price for one person. On a group tour you share the coach and the guide with many people. If you travel alone, that is often cheaper than a private tour for one.
When a private tour is the better fit
Oman is a country made for calm and space, and that is where a group tour sometimes chafes. A private tour suits you better if you:
- want to travel at your own pace. Staying longer at Wadi Shab because it is so beautiful, an extra night in the desert, breakfast at nine instead of seven. In a group, the coach is waiting.
- want to choose where you sleep. From a mud-brick guesthouse in Misfat al Abriyeen to a resort on Jebel Akhdar. On our luxury tour we show what is possible at the top end.
- travel with children. A group programme is rarely designed around children. On a private tour we build in swimming stops, shorter driving days and rest time.
- want to see places that are not on the standard programme. A mountain village no coach can reach, a beach without anyone else, a morning of snorkelling at the Daymaniyat Islands.
- are celebrating a special occasion. A honeymoon or anniversary is not something you want to share with eighteen strangers.
What does a private tour cost compared to a group tour?
The persistent misconception is that a private tour is always more expensive. That is not necessarily true. Our 7-day tour starts at €999 per person based on two sharing, including accommodation and activities according to the itinerary. That is comparable to many group tours of the same length.
If you travel as a family or with four friends, you share the car and often a family room or villa too. Per person, a private tour then quickly becomes cheaper than a group tour, with far more freedom. Only for solo travellers does the group tour usually win on price.
Self-drive or driver-guide?
The private tour has one more choice the group tour does not. Self-driving in Oman is easy: the roads are excellent, traffic is calm and signage is in English. Your national driving licence is enough. We give you a detailed day-by-day programme with routes, insider tips and the phone numbers of your accommodations.
With a driver-guide all you have to do is look. An Omani guide knows the tracks, the stories and the people. In the desert and the mountains especially that is an enrichment, and on a luxury tour most travellers choose this option.
