The road up to the Jebel Akhdar plateau is only open to four-wheel drives, the last kilometres to Jebel Shams are unpaved and in the wadis you drive on gravel. That is why a 4x4 SUV is always ready for you, insured and with the terms in writing beforehand.

4x4 SUV, first-class tarmac and tracks where allowed
Oman has one of the best road networks in the Middle East. You drive on the right, the motorway limit is 120 km/h and there are plenty of speed cameras, so a relaxed pace pays off. Outside the villages traffic is thin and the views are big.
Most European and North American licences are valid in Oman; an international driving permit is not mandatory but useful when collecting the car. There is zero tolerance for alcohol behind the wheel, and speeding fines are settled when you return the car. Read our article on the international driving permit as well.
You do not drive into the dunes of the Wahiba Sands yourself: the camp collects you. Never cross a wadi after rain, not even in a 4x4. At the foot of Jebel Akhdar the police check that you have a four-wheel drive. With those three rules in mind, self-driving in Oman is above all very relaxed.
If you would rather look than steer, you travel with an Omani driver-guide in a comfortable 4x4. Combining works too: drive yourself along the coast and in the mountains, and take a driver for the desert days. We advise what suits your route and your party.

Yes. The roads are wide and well maintained, traffic outside the cities is light and signs are bilingual Arabic and English. The main risks are speeding, crossing wadis after rain and driving at night outside towns, where camels and goats can be on the road. Our day-by-day programme is built so that you arrive in daylight.
Usually not: most European and North American licences are accepted. Rental companies sometimes ask for an international driving permit in addition, so we recommend getting one to be safe. Bring your passport and a credit card in the driver’s name for the deposit as well.

No. At the Wahiba Sands you park at the edge of the dunes and the camp collects you in its own 4x4. That keeps the rental car out of the sand and means you need no dune-driving experience.
